With a teaching faculty of 80 members, the Department of College English Teaching is in charge of teaching college English to the university’s 20,000 non-English major undergraduate students divided into 250 classes each semester. It also offers over 20 elective courses including Intercultural Communication, Business English, Translation, British and American Literature, and Advanced Speaking, etc. According to the requirements of the latest National Guidelines on College English Teaching and the National Steering Committee for College English Teaching, the above courses fully embody the instrumentality and humanity of a College English course series.
As one of the first 30 national pilot reform programs of college English teaching, the College English course in South China Agricultural University started graded teaching and achieved remarkable effects. In addition, the College English course and Intercultural Communication course have both received project approval from the Department of Education of Guangdong Province and been constructed as the Provincial Excellent Resource Sharing Course.
Through the joint efforts of the faculty of the Department, students make remarkable progress: the pass rate for the CET 4 has successively hit new peaks in recent years, and students actively take part in various English competitions such as the National English Competition for College Students, the CCTV Cup, the Twenty-first Century Cup, and the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press Cup, and more than 100 of them have won awards, which fully demonstrates the strong English capability of SCAU people.
