Dr. Wang Peng from the University of Maryland gave a lecture on “ARelevance Approach to Cultural Competence in Interpretation, Translation, andLocalization Curriculum” in Room 5A402 in the School of Foreign Studieson March 6. Professor Huang Guowen chaired the lecture.

In her lecture, Dr. Wang analyzed the closerelation between culture and translation, as well as how to cultivate students’cultural competence in translation teaching. Her idea was exemplified withexpressions like “long time no see” and “fighting, work hard”. She also talkedabout localization and differences in perception between Orientals andWesterners.

Dr. Wang also introduced the curricula inTranslation and Interpretation Graduate Section of the University of Maryland,which adopted the theories of Systemic Functional Grammar in course design.

The lecture attracted a large number ofteachers and students from the School.
