On March 23, Prof. Zhao Junfeng from Guangdong University of ForeignStudies visited SFS and gave a lecture titled "The Construction ofTranslation Discipline in the New Era: Ideas and Principles". Deputy Deanof SFS Prof. Li Zhanxi hosted the lecture and teachers and students in the MTIcenter attended.

  Prof. Zhao Junfeng started with the four functions of higher educationinstitutions, namely cultivating talents, scientific research, serving societyand inheriting culture. He pointed out that translation and interpretationtalents must possess four things: knowledge, ability, quality and wit, whichcould only be achieved via long-term practice and accumulation. Prof. Zhao thengave an overview of MTI education in China, focusing on the problems thatexisted, such as teachers lacking sufficient time and energy and students lackingprofessional knowledge as well as internship base shortage. He put forwardsuggestions like conforming to national development strategies, followingmarket needs, concentrating on practical abilities, constructing teaching bodyand guaranteeing students' quality.

  The lecture was well received by the teachers and students present.
