Context Incompleteness of Textbook Exercises from a Corpus Perspective by Emeritus Prof. Kawaguchi Yoshikazu (川口義一) from Waseda University

The 31st and 32nd  Fora on Language, Culture and Translation were held on March 14 in SFS. The invitedspeakers were Emeritus Prof. Kawaguchi Yoshikazu (川口義一)from Waseda University and Prof. Liang Chunxiang from Toyo University. The twoprofessors respectively talked about the context incompleteness of exercises intextbooks based on a natural conversation corpus and Japanese spa culture.Associate Prof. Tang Liyan, Director of the Department of Japanese, hosted thefora and all the teachers and students in the department attended.

  Kawaguchi Yoshikazu is an Emeritus Professor in Waseda University andhas published a large number of papers and books. Using "Thesis Guidance43-45" from "BTSJ Japanese Conversation Corpus" built by StateJapanese Research Institute of Japan as data, he introduced the connotation andusage in concrete contexts of ~でしょう・~かもしれません・~はずですand ~と・~ば. He then pointed out the problem ofcontext incompleteness that existed in the exercises of textbooks. He suggestedthat teachers should assign essay writing tasks to students so as tocontextualize and personalize language practice.

  Prof. Liang Chunxiang specializes in international tourism and is adoctoral supervisor in Toyo University. In her lecture, she first analyzed whyJapan changed its national policy from scientific innovation to tourism,pointing out that tourism plays an important role in Japan's economy. She thenintroduced the definition, distribution, functions, etc. of Japanese hotsprings as well as the differences between Chinese and Japanese spa cultures.

  With simple language and vivid examples, the two lectures broadened thehorizons of teachers and students in the Department of Japanese.
