On April 7, Professor Li Changshuan fromBeijing Foreign Studies University visited the School of Foreign Studies andgave a lecture on critical thinking and critical teaching in translation. Thelectured was hosted by Professor Li Zhanxi, Director of the MTI Center of the School.
Professor Li pointed out that thetranslator’s understanding should approximate, reach or even exceed the writer’slevel and that they should express what the writer has expressed, wish toexpress or even ought to express. He also suggested that when it came to numbers,locations, foreign figures etc, translators should consult English references.
Professor Li’s thought-provoking ideas andhumorous language attracted a large number of teachers and students from theSchool. He also answered questions from the audience regarding translationteaching, note-taking in interpretation, enrollment of graduate students inBeijing Foreign Studies University. Professor Li Zhanxi of SFS summarized thelecture and expressed sincere gratitude to Professor Li Changshuan.
